Central Universities to grant UG Admissions via Common University Entrance Test CUET

As per a notification dated 21st March 2022, the University Grants Commission announced that all UGC-funded Central Universities shall be admitting students to all UG level programs starting from 2022-2023 session based on a Common University Entrance Test (CUET).

The CUET will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), the same agency that conducts the JEE Main, NCHMJEE (Hotel Management), ICAR AIEEE, JNUEE, UGC NET, DUET, GPAT, CMAT, etc.

Some key aspects that we could gather from the interviews given by the Chairman, UGC, to TV channels on 22 March are as below:

(A) Which courses does it apply to: CUET is applicable (mandatorily) only for admissions in undergraduate professional courses in specified universities. However, JEE and NEET continue in their existing manner/format.

(B) Which Universities are covered: It is mandatory for all UGC-funded central universities to adopt CUET. However, it may also be adopted by State / Deemed / Private universities.  As per UGC data, there are a total of 54 central universities (as on 31 March 2021).  

(C) Will Delhi University Admissions be covered by CUET:  Yes, DU admissions will be through CUET.

(D) What happens to admission quota/reservations: No impact. However, students who get this benefit also have to attempt CUET.

(E) How many subjects can one take the test for: An aspirant can write the test for a maximum of 6 core subjects out of a total 27 core subjects.

(F) Will there be weightage to class 12 marks: Not yet clear.

(G) Will there be a minimum qualifying marks requirement in class 12 score: This is to be decided by universities on their own. They may fix minimum class 12 qualifying marks for each course on their own.

(H) How will the counseling be done: NTA will only conduct the entrance test. There will be no central counseling. Students will have to apply to respective universities who will conduct counseling on their own. Students will need to meet the minimum qualifying criteria as fixed for course of their choice by the concerned university.

(I) What will be the syllabus for CUET: The syllabus will be based on NCERT curriculum.

(J) Which languages will it be conducted in: The Admissions will be conducted across India in 13 languages.
